PC file backup basics

Keep at least one separate copy of important personal files.

What to try

  1. Identify important folders such as Documents, Pictures and project files.
  2. Copy them to a trusted external drive or another storage location.
  3. Keep the backup device separate when it is not being used.
  4. Open a few backed-up files occasionally to confirm the copies work.
  5. For very important data, consider keeping another copy in a reputable cloud or off-site service.

Safety note

A backup is only useful if you can restore from it. Never rely on one copy stored on the same PC.
